VLC allows you to adjust subtitle delay on the fly:

If you found subtitles that translate correctly but are appearing too early or too late, you don't need to find a new file—you can update the timing yourself.

If French accented characters (like é, à, ç, è ) appear as strange symbols or gibberish, the file encoding is wrong. Open the .srt file in (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac). Click File > Save As .

Change the Encoding dropdown menu from ANSI or Western European to . Save the file and reload it in your media player.

Choose subtitles calibrated for 25 fps (PAL) or 29.97 fps (NTSC).
