The plot follows Hancock, a down‑and‑out hero whose ill‑considered behaviour causes millions of dollars in collateral damage. After he saves the life of PR executive Ray Embrey (Bateman), Ray decides to help rehabilitate Hancock’s public image. The plan goes well until Hancock meets Ray’s wife, Mary (Theron), who harbours a surprising secret of her own.
