Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) discovers his ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has erased him from her memory. He undergoes the same procedure, only to change his mind mid-process.
As the procedure begins, the story takes a surreal, heartbreaking turn. Joel finds himself reliving his memories backward, from the bitter arguments at the end of the relationship to the sweet, tender moments that defined its beginning. In a panic, he realizes he doesn't want to lose her after all. The rest of the film is a desperate, mind-bending journey to "hide" Clementine in memories where the technicians won't find her, inside the deepest recesses of his mind.
